Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Ozlem’s Journey in the Meat Industry

Eighteen years ago, Ozlem, or Oz as her friends and colleagues call her, took a leap of faith, moving to the U.S. for her late husband’s job with Cargill. Determined to continue her career in marketing, she reached out for guidance—and that simple act led to an incredible journey in the meat industry.

The industry has evolved since she first started. Early on, as so often happens, she found herself as the only woman in meetings, facing challenges that many leaders wouldn't. Despite being highly qualified, she found herself getting passed over for promotions and her strong opinions were labeled as "emotional." But instead of backing down, she pushed forward. Today, as the Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Seaboard Foods, she leads with resilience and understanding, proving that leadership isn’t defined by outdated stereotypes.

She’s encouraged by the progress she sees—the workforce is becoming more balanced, and the next generation is driving a brighter, more inclusive future.

“I believe as we have more females in leadership roles, with support from each other, we are making a change.”

Her path hasn’t always been easy. There were moments of isolation, times when she felt like she was fighting alone. But hearing others' stories, learning from their success in overcoming adversity, and growing tougher, yet more compassionate, has made her the leader she is today. She firmly believes in lifting others up, that everyone deserves a seat at the table, and those who have forged a path before should help ensure others have the same opportunity.

“The sense of empowerment is amazing if it is used correctly. My goal now, as a leader, is to empower others in our industry.”

Oz’s journey is a testament to perseverance, leadership, and the power of community. As more women step into leadership roles and support one another, the industry will continue to evolve—for the better.
